The United States embassy today awarded Member of Parliament for Same East constituency in Kilimanjaro Region, Mrs Anne Kilango Malecela, the 2009 Tanzanian Woman of Courage Award.
According to a statement from the US Embassy, the annual award was established to recognize women who have shown exceptional courage and leadership.
The US Mission in Tanzania also nominated Mrs Malecela as this year’s candidate for the 2009 International Women of Courage Award for distinguishing herself by challenging the leadership in her own party to confront the question of corruption.
“In doing so, she broke from the political custom despite facing personal threats to her own safety. “She persevered in her determination to fight corruption and asked tough questions that contributed to advance efforts of transparency and good governance within the ruling party," reads part of the statement.
