AT least seven Tanzanian nationals are included in the current list of fugitives wanted by the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) for various serious criminal offences ranging from fraud, to kidnapping, to terrorism. Interpol has slapped the Tanzanian fugitives with a red notice, meaning that authorities are seeking the "arrest or provisional arrest of the wanted persons with a view to extradition." It is understood that the seven locals are wanted by law enforcement agencies in the United States, Canada, Botswana, Swaziland, and elsewhere around the world. Notorious radar deal paymaster Shailesh Pragji Vithlani is the latest addition to this Interpol list of wanted Tanzanians. Born in Mwanza on October 3, 1964, Vithlani is wanted for counterfeit/forgery on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam. He is believed to currently hold both Tanzanian and British passports. Other Tanzanian fugitives on the list include 48-year-old Oscar Kibazohi, who is wanted by authorities in Canada in connection with alleged crimes against children and kidnapping. Kibazohi is believed to have been responsible for the disappearance of two children in Canada on Christmas Day, way back in 2000. The boys he allegedly kidnapped are Brian Mujuni Kibazohi (currently 12 years old) and Douglas Rugambwa Kibazohi (now believed to be aged 14 years). Douglas was born in Tanzania on July 4, 1994, and is listed as a Tanzanian citizen. His mother's maiden name is Mdota. On the other hand, Brian was born in Kitchner, Ontario, Canada on November 13, 1996, and is listed as a Canadian citizen. His mother's maiden name is Salome. According to the Interpol website, both Brian and Douglas speak both Kiswahili and English, and have not been seen in Canada since December 25, 2000. Kibazohi's own relationship with the two minors could not be immediately established. Interpol has placed a yellow notice on both children, which represents a call for help in "locating missing persons, often minors, or to help identify persons who are unable to identify themselves." Also on the wanted list is Mwanza-born Musobi Mageni (36), wanted by the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in Dar es Salaam on fraud charges, and Franklin Peter Lauwo (37), being sought by authorities on the basis of an international warrant for his arrest on fraud charges issued by authorities in Houston, Texas, US. In Gaborone, Botswana, law enforcement authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of another Tanzanian national, Julius Matiko Machagge. The 31-year-old, Moshi-born Matiko is wanted in the Botswana capital to face various charges of fraud. A well-known, Zanzibar-born terrorism suspect with links to Al-Qaeda, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, still appears on Interpol's wanted list for his alleged involvement in the 1998 US embassy bombings in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, although it is understood that he was captured and detained by Pakistani forces in a joint operation with the United States in 2004. Ghailani is now believed to be currently held at the notorious Guantanamo Bay detention camp. |
