The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training used more than 5bn/- as loans to Tanzanian students studying abroad in the financial year 2007/08.

Deputy minister Gaudentia Kabaka told the National Assembly yesterday when responding to a question by Wawi MP Hamad Rashid Mohamed, who had wanted to know the number of Tanzanian students studying abroad and how much money was given to them, as well as the procedure used to ensure that the money reached them.

The minister said from 2005/06 to 2007/08, about 1,791 Tanzanian students who were studying abroad had benefited from the amount.

She said the number of students in China was 255, India (158), Poland (64), Ukraine (86), Algeria (238), USA (4), UK (12), Uganda (594), Kenya (17), Rwanda (1), Cuba (25), Finland (1), Malyasia (1), Turkey (1), South Africa (54), Canada (4) and Sweden (1).

She further said that students got their money through their bank accounts in their respective foreign countries.

``The funds sent to those students are loans from the Higher Education Students Loan Board...the money is for accommodation and meals as well as their studies,`` she said.

She said cost-sharing principles applied to students studying abroad as in the case of students studying in local varsities.
