By Colum Lynch
UNITED NATIONS, March 31, 2009. -- The Obama administration decided Tuesday to seek a seat on the U.N. Human Rights Council, reversing a decision by the Bush administration to shun the United Nations' premier rights body to protest the influence of repressive states.
The Washington Post sister paper "Express" reported on April 1, 2009 that the USA will seek election to the UN Human Rights Council this year (2009) , the State Department said Tuesday, announcing the Obama administration latest reversal of President George Walker Bush's foreign policies.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and United Sstates of America (USA) Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said in a statement tht the administration will joint the council to help make it more effecdtive as part of President Obama's desire to create a "new era of engagement" with the international community.
The Bus adminsitration had boycotted the council over its repreated criticism of Israel and its refusal to cite flagrant rights abuses in Sudan and elsewhere.
Rice, a strong advocate for seeking a seat on the council, said the decision was made "because we believe tht working from within, we can make the council a more ffective forum to promote and protect uman rights." she said. "We hope to work in partnership witht many countries to achieve a more effective council."
