Laura Frey, 30, died in hospital after being pulled out of the River Garnock in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, on Sunday.
A body believed to be her partner, Darren Greenan, 33, who also went into the water after their pets, was recovered on Monday morning.
The couple had been walking along the bank with their baby daughter in a pram.
Strathclyde Police said Ms Frey died on Sunday night at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.
She and Mr Greenan were walking along the river bank with their daughter at around 2pm when their dogs went into the river and got into difficulty. The pair both went into the water to try to rescue their pets.
The couple, from the Blacklands area of Kilwinning, are thought to have been walking up to three dogs, two of which were found dead in the water.
A police statement said: "At around 10.15am on Monday the body of a male, thought to be 33-year-old Darren Greenan, was recovered from the River Garnock near to the site of the initial incident. Formal identification will take place in due course.
"Sadly, the 30-year-old woman, Laura Frey, who was rescued from the water and taken to Crosshouse Hospital for treatment, died on Sunday night.
Mr Greenan's cousin, Laurie Miller, told STV news: "He was a brilliant guy. He swam like a fish. He was a family man. He'd do anything for you. I can't believe it."
