CHEMICALLY FAILED ROMANCE?
While the UK is reeling over the surprise split of beloved couple Katie and Peter, a leading relationship scientist says the reason is all in the brain chemistry…
When Peter Andre ended his 3 ½ year marriage to Katie Price yesterday over photographs of her drunken canoodling in a club, she was said to be broken-hearted. But according to a leading relationship scientist, the reason behind the split lies not in the couple’s hearts, but their brains.
Dr Helen Fisher, an eminent biological anthropologist and Chief Scientific Adviser to dating site Match.com, has worked with over 30,000 singles to decipher the secret to lasting love. She believes it is all down to chemistry and specifically which of four chemicals is the most dominant in a person’s brain, dopamine, serotonin, oestrogen or testosterone. Dr Fisher has discovered four unique personality types; Explorers, Builders, Negotiators and Directors. Her science can help explain why some matches lead to a life of lasting love and others don’t.
According to Dr Fisher, Katie Price is a classic Explorer. These are exuberant, adventurous personalities (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are other examples of Explorers) have risk-taking Dopamine dominant in their brains. This means they are attracted to ambition, success and power and constantly strive to achieve. Katie shows these characteristics in her flamboyant dress-sense and workaholism. Explorers are always moving on to the next challenge, as seen in Katie’s life as she worked her way up from modelling to riding to writing children’s books and novels.
By contrast, home-loving Peter Andre is a classic Builder in personality. In his brain, calming Serotonin is the dominant chemical, making him more practical, steady and family-oriented in nature. While Katie’s career grew, Peter stayed at home to provide a stable environment for the couple’s children – Junior, 3, Princess, 22 months – and Harvey, Katie’s son from a previous relationship with footballer Dwight Yorke.
But while Builders might be attracted to Explorer’s exciting personalities, and Explorers might be attracted to Builders’ reliable, dependable natures, Dr Fisher believes that this paring will often find it difficult to make love last the test of time. They simply don’t share enough common ground. Explorers can feel trapped by Builders’ love of routine and schedules, and Builders will eventually tire of being – as they see it – the only “grown up” in the relationship. Could this be what has happened with Katie and Peter?
Dr Helen Fisher worked with over 30,000 members of dating site Match.com to devise her unique theories on the four different personality types, and anyone can take her free Personality Test online to find out which type they are.
The four types are:
* Explorers - dopamine is the dominant chemical meaning they are novelty seeking, risk-taking and spontaneous.
* Builders - serotonin is the dominant chemical and they are calm, conscientious, loyal and cautious.
* Negotiators - oestrogen is the dominant chemical. They are imaginative, intuitive, compassionate and have good people skills.
* Directors are ruled by testosterone making them direct, decisive, competitive and often musical.
Explorers work well with other Explorers, and Builders go well with Builders, but Negotiators and Directors can find love together. Dr Fisher explains: 'The reasons why we love are incredibly complex, but it is possible to scientifically understand why people partner better with certain types.'
Other classic mismatches, according to Dr Fisher, were Jennifer Aniston (Builder) and Brad Pitt (Explorer). Pitt eventually left to find harmony with fellow-Explorer Angelina Jolie. And Guy Ritchie, a Director, and Madonna, another Explorer, struggled to make things work long-term. But Gordon Brown and wife Sarah are both Builders, and David Cameron and his wife Samantha are both Explorers, meaning they can support and respect each other.
Match.com’s relationship expert Kate Taylor says, “I think we’re all saddened by the split of Britain’s favourite young family, but Dr Helen Fisher’s theories help make sense of the reasons behind it. Personally I’m not convinced that this is the end for Katie and Peter, but knowing their personality types should give them the knowledge to understand each other and hopefully make it work long-term.”
