PRESIDENT Jakaya Kiwete has said that
the Fourth Phase government is proud of achievements it had made since
it came into power in 2005 for laying strong foundation in implementing
Tanzania Development Vision 2025, which aims at enabling the nation to
attain middle-sized economy by 2025.
A statement issued by the Directorate of
Presidential Communications in Dar es Salaam at the weekend stated that
the president made the remarks last Friday in Washington, DC, during
his lecture at Woodrow Wilson International Centre. The centre focuses
on independent research, open dialogue and actionable ideas.
President Kikwete was optimistic that
his successor would learn and maintain the achievements made and proceed
from where the Fourth Phase Government ended.
He was also optimistic that Tanzania
would have legislation and policy on gas management and its revenue
whose (gas) production is expected to start by 2020.
In the lecture, which was attended by
various dignitaries including ambassadors, academicians and leaders of
the centre, the president mentioned achievements and challenges in
education, politics, economy and social development during his 10-year
tenure.
President Kikwete expressed his greatest
source of pride is to continue holding the country together despite the
challenges, adding that his government contributed immensely in
political struggles that enabled two political parties; Chama cha Mapinduzi [CCM] and Civic United Front [CUF] to
strike reconciliation pact and consensus in 2010.
He explained further that such agreement
caused Zanzibar to witness peaceful elections and ultimately formation
of Government of National Unity (GNU) comprised of CCM and CUF.
“I hope we’ll conduct free, fair and
peaceful elections in order to hand over presidency to my successor in
state of harmony,” the President said.
The major policy tenets that the
president considers the hallmark of his presidency include a united
nation, peace and political stability, fast socioeconomic growth and
development, the fight against poverty and accelerated development.
In the lecture, President Kikwete is
also proud of his efforts to consolidate democracy and ensure good
governance, the rule of law and human rights, undertaking an unrelenting
fight against crime and developing good relations with other countries.
