Deputy Minister for Water, Amos Makala
The
current Dar es Salaam water shortage will be less intense on completion
of current repairs to the infrastructure, the Deputy Minister for
Water, Amos Makala, has said.
He
told the National Assembly yesterday that the present acute water
shortage in the city was mainly caused by the rehabilitation now going
on that would end soon.
He
said the government was looking for contractors for Upper and Lower
Ruvu water projects whose completion would to a great extent ease the
city’s water shortage.
“It
is true that there is a serious water problem in Dar es Salaam at
present. But this is mainly because of the construction going on that
will end soon,” he assured MPs.
The
deputy minister was responding to a supplementary question by Susan
Lyimo (Special Seats-Chadema) who wanted to know when the current Dar es
Salaam water shortage would end.
She
had told the deputy minister: “The water problem in the city still
persists while the government always talks about improving the water
system. I want the government to state when the projects will be
completed.”
Earlier,
in her main question, Josephine Genzabuke (Special Seats-CCM) wanted to
know when the Kasulu water project initiated sometime back would start
operating.
In reply, the deputy minister said the project, that began 2012/2013, was about to be completed.
He
said the Nyumbingwa project in the district, that was allocated
890.7m/-, was in its final stages and 683.9m/- had already been spent on
it.
He
said the Kasangeni project, allocated 882.9 million/-, had been
completed by 65 percent of and 287.4 million/- had been spent on it.
According
to Makala, other projects include the 423.4m/- Nyarugusu project. He
said this is 70 percent complete and 221.6m/- had been spent on it.
He
mentioned the other one as the Rungwe Mpya project which was allocated
1.46b/-. He said this had been completed by 50 percent and 285.2m/- had
been spent on it so far.
The
deputy minister added that the municipality had set aside Sh298.42
million for water projects in the 2015/2016 financial year.
