Athletics Tanzania (AT) Secretary General Suleiman Nyambui boards a
flight to Brunei where he is to take his new role as head coach of the
country’s national athletics team.
Nyambui
said he will be in Brunei for six months where he will work under the
Ministry of Culture and Sport in training middle and long distance
runners.
He
said the agreement with the Asian country is that he works for six
month on probation with option to sign a two year contract extension
upon agreement.
“I will be in Brunei for six month working on probation I will be
directly working with the Brunei Amateur Athletics Association (BAAA)
but I have been employed by that country’s ministry of culture and
sports. At the end of my six month tenure I’m expecting to sign a
two-year contract to work as the national athletics head coach”, he said
.
Nyambui said he is taking his new post as a challenge to his athletics coaching career .
“It’s
a challenge but I am not afraid of breaking new sports frontiers, you
know the trend in Africa is that of exporting the finest athletes to
Europe, Asia and other places and, in return, welcoming to the
continent every Jim and Jack masquerading as coaches, I believe I can
reverse such a trend” he said.
The
63-year old is the holder of several athletics coaching certificates
and his highest qualification is the chief coach [recognised by
International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF)] and previously has
coached in the United States of America (USA) and Bahrain.
Nyambui,
who is also a sports administration lecturer, has been conducting
athletics coaching clinics in many teaching colleges in the country.
“I
want to take to Asia a new coaching dimension, full of rhythm and
technique. I believe Brunei athletics will learn a lot from me“, he
said.
However,
Nyambui said he is not leaving the country a happy man as the
authorities have failed to develop athletics in the country.
He
said his aim was to fully work for the development of athletics at home
and not going oversees to work. He said even when he returns home after
the end of his contract he will not make use of his experience as the
country lacks athletics development plans.
“I
‘m going to Brunei to work there, but I wanted to use my expertise to
develop the sport in the country, the problem is how can I work when the
authorities seem not to care on athletics development, we do not have a
high performance centre, we even lack a centre of excellence, it is a pity”, bemoaned Nyambui.
Nyambui
is a former track athlete who specialised in various
long-distance disciplines. He won the bronze medal at the 1978
All-Africa Games, then a silver medal in 5,000 metres at the 1980 Moscow
Olympics and finished first at three consecutive marathons between 1987
and 1988. He holds multiple indoor national records of Tanzania in
athletics.
