Ahead
of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) deadline later this year,
Tanzania has embarked on an initiative to better empower youth on the
UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the proposed set of targets
after the MDGs.
Addressing
youth in Dar es Salaam yesterday during a symposium titled: “Putting
Young people at the Heart of Development” Director for International
Cooperation Department at Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador
Celestine Mushy said that the United Nations has initiated SDGs for
2015 – 2030 as the guideline to future international development.
“Unlike the seven Millennium Development Goals, SDGs are 17 goals and 169 targets to be achieved by2030 ,” he detailed.
According
to the Ambassador, the millennium goals in education and health have
tremendously improved in Tanzania making it one of the few countries to
register such great accomplishment across the whole world.
Nonetheless,
Ambassador Mushy cited that, according to 2012 census there is an
increment of 32.7 million people aged between 10 and 35 since 1967
hence; “empowering youth to participate in decision making processes
should not only be in development aspects but also in other social,
political, economical and environmental aspects.”
He
also urged youth to establish forums that will help them get knowledge
on how to participate in national and international development forums.
The
Ambassador urged youth to use social media wisely and to avoid
distorting traditional and ethical values but rather to bring about
great and positive change socially and economically.
In
response, Director of Youth Development from the Ministry of
Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, James Kajugusi said the
government through the National Assembly has brought forward policies on
the formation of a youth council which will help the youth convey their
problems and proposed solutions.
The
MDGs aimed at eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, achieving
universal primary education, promoting gender equality and empower
women, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating
HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and ensuring environmental
sustainability.
Among
others the SDGs aim at ending poverty in all its forms everywhere,
ending hunger, achieving global food security and improved nutrition and
promoting sustainable agriculture. Also on the list is ensuring healthy
lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages.
Other
are, ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting
lifelong learning opportunities for all as well as achieving gender
equality and empowering all women and girls.
Others
still are, ensuring availability and sustainable management of water
and sanitation for all, access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and
modern energy for all, promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable
economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
Also
on the list is building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive
and sustainable industrialisation, and fostering innovation, reducing
inequality within and among countries.
